A diversified organic pork production – presentation of a concept based on seasonal outdoor rearing of very small entire males Organic Eprints
Kongsted, A.G.; Hermansen, J.E.; Claudi-Magnussen, C.; Andersen, B.H..
The risk of boar taint in entire males is supposed to increase with increased age and weight. Thus, a method to reduce this risk may be to slaughter the pigs at a low age and weight. This strategy is investigated as part of a new concept for organic pig production. It is hypothesised that organic pork has to differ markedly from conventional in order to overcome the heavy price competition. A seasonal outdoor rearing system based on production of small entire males, large female pigs and sows slaughtered after their first litter is believed to be a feasible strategy for producing organic pork with high credibility and superior eating quality. The study included a traditional breed, the Danish Black-Spotted. 17 gilts farrowed in April. Within the first week...

A study on four feeding strategies of 100% organic origin for piglets concerning performance, health status, losses and economy in organic agriculture Organic Eprints
Weißmann, Friedrich; Bussemas, Ralf; Falk, Anna.
Organic agriculture is defined as a low-external-input-system but piglets’ necessity for high quality diets seems to contradict low-external-input feeding strategies. Hence, a total of 361 piglets was tested from day 14 – 63 post natum concerning performance, health status, losses and diet costs by means of four feeding strategies of 100% organic origin: (i) high-external-input diet, (ii) medium-external-input diet, (iii) lowexternal-input diet, each with grass-clover-silage as roughage source, and (iv) above mentioned low-external-input diet with straw replacing grass-clover-silage. The highexternal-input-diet achieved the significantly highest live weight gain; all other strategies were similar at a lower level. There were no differences in health...

Agricultural land use in Danish organic pig production Organic Eprints
Knage-Drangsfeldt, Kristian.
In Denmark the organic sows farrow outdoor on pasture (picture 1) and the gestation sows are outdoor from 15 April to 1 November on pasture (picture 2). Some farmers also keep their weaned piglets on outdoor pasture (picture 3). In the project pEcosystem data from five herds have delivered their crop plan for 2016. This gives unique information on the land use in Danish organic pig production.

Aim of the breeding research in LIB-SP3 and the methods to be used Organic Eprints
Merks, Jan.
‘Low input’ pig production systems are usually characterised by smaller herd size, more space per animal, lower capital investment, often outdoor management, provision of bedding, greater labour requirement and focus on animal welfare. Examples of ‘low input’ pig production systems are “Iberico” in Spain, “Neuland” pigs in Germany, “Scharrelvarkens” in The Netherlands, “Natura Farm” in Switzerland, “Label Rouge” in France and “Freedom Food” in United Kingdom. Organic pig production systems have similar characteristics to those described for ‘low input systems’ above. However, organic farming standards prescribe e.g. low stocking densities, access to outdoor runs, restrict the level of ‘bought in, non-organic’ feeds etc, which usually results in higher...

Airborne biological hazards and dust in fattening pig facilities with and without straw Organic Eprints
Hartung, E.; Ollesch, K.; Häussermann, A.; Rieger, M.A.; Diefenbach, H.; Sundrum, A.; Ebke, M.; Lohmeyer, M..
Against the background of a high prevalence of respiratory diseases among the workers with the housing of fattening pigs as well as conspicuous negative pulmonary results among the fattening pigs it will be necessary to determine within the framework of an interdisciplinary cooperating project the impact of and hazards for humans, animals and the environment wherever it occurred in fattening pig facilities. To achieve this research has been carried out in representative systems of housing fattening pigs especially taking into account organic systems with the use of straw in deep litter or minimal litter systems in comparison to conventional systems, where the straw was used as on occupation material. In correspondence with the current discussion in the...

Airborne biological hazards in different pig fattening systems Organic Eprints
Diefenbach, H.; Hartung, E.; Sundrum, A.; Lohmeyer, M.; Rieger, M.A..
In this research project two organic and two conventional housing systems for fattening pigs are assessed in regard to the emission of microorganisms, endotoxins and dust. The concentrations of microorganisms and endotoxins varied between the different housing systems while no distinct differences for the dust concentrations were observed. Endotoxins concentrations reached up to 14 495 EU/m³ (median) in deep litter stable, indicating the high exposure with biological agents during farm work. The differences between the stables could not be assigned to the organic or conventional kind of husbandry but to the management of the systems. Copyright © by BIOLIFE, s.a.s.

ALLOMETRIC GROWTH OF PRIMAL CUTS AND TISSUES IN THE PIG Ciência Rural
Siewerdt,Frank; Farias,José Viriato da Silva; Osório,José Carlos da Silveira; Jacondino,Ilo Francisco Ribeiro.
Data from 82 purebred and crossbred Large White and Duroc barrows and gilts were used to describe the growth of carcass primal cuts, of tissues, and of several organs. Pigs were allowed ad libitum to a conventional diet, which contained com and soybean meal. Pigs were weighted weekly and were slaughtered when attained a liveweight over 90kg. An allometric pattern of growth was assumed. Within the observed range of liveweight, the carcass grew slower than the whole animal. An increase of carcass weight corresponds to a similar increase of lean, but also corresponds to a larger increase of fat tissues. A suggestion to slaughter pigs near to 90kg of liveweight is presented, in order to obtain leaner carcasses.

Organic Eprints
Weißmann, Friedrich; Baulain, Ulrich; Brade, Wilfried; Werner, Daniela; Brandt, Horst.
Beim...

Alternativ kontrol af indvoldsorm hos svin Organic Eprints
Mejer, Helena; Roepstorff, Allan.

Früh, Barbara; Leiber, Florian; Spengler Neff, Anet; Dierauer, Hansueli.

Alternative protein crops in diets of organically housed weanling pigs Organic Eprints
van der Peet-Schwering, C.M.C.; van Krimpen, M.M.; Kemme, P.; Binnendijk, G.P.; Jongbloed, A.W.; Henniphof-Schoonhoven, C..
The effects of feeding weanling piglets diets with three different levels of three organic protein crops on performance and health were studied. Diets with 10, 20 or 30% field beans (Vicia faba, variety Aurelia, tannin-free), 10, 20 or 30% white lupins (Lupinus albus, variety Dieta, alkaloid-low) and 20, 40 or 60% quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa, variety Atlas, saponin-free) were compared with a control diet containing 15% soybean expeller and 2.2% soybeans. Besides, the apparent ileal digestibility and the apparent total tract digestibility of nutrients of the control diet and the diets with 30% field beans, 30% lupins and 40% quinoa were assessed. At weaning, 1,055 weanling piglets were assigned to one of the 10 experimental treatments. The piglets were...

Alternatives for the substitution of synthetic vitamin B2 or vitamin B2 produced from GMOs Organic Eprints
Oehen, Bernadette; Früh, Barbara; Schneider, Claudia.
Today in conventional food and feed production added vitamin B2 is produced almost exclusively from a GMO,1 namely the genetically modified Bacillus subtilis. Vitamin B2 applied in certified organic food and feed productions is an exception, as it is still synthesized conventionally. In fall 2007 and also recently, there has been a lack of non-GMO derived vitamin B2 on the European market, which has caused temporary supply problems for organic producers. This event triggered the political will to conduct new research in order to find alternative solutions for the substitution of synthetic vitamin B2 in organic agriculture.
